A Thai meal generally consists of a number of different dishes which are shared by everyone at the table. Rice is how every meal starts. Everything else is then supposed to complement and balance all the other ingredients as well as the various dishes on the table. This is very different to the way we are used to eating. We traditionally order steak or lamb or vegetarian and more often than not it should be medium rare and cooked to perfection.
A Thai meal is not like that. It’s more spontaneous. Not so rigid, chaotic even. There are no starters but that does not mean that the Thai’s don’t do finger food or that satay sticks would be out of place with your order. Curries for example are more often than not accompanied by a clear soup, an egg dish possibly and a stir fry…and for breakfast. But that is all still a matter of individual choice and preference.
